Dryer Repair

Dryer not heating, taking two cycles to dry, or making new noises? I repair gas and electric dryers across all major brands in Fort Collins.

Common Problems

  • Takes two cycles to dry (usually a clogged vent)
  • No heat on an electric dryer
  • No heat on a gas dryer (igniter or gas valve coils)
  • Loud rumbling, squealing, or thumping on tumble
  • Drum will not turn but motor hums (broken belt)
  • Thermal fuse has blown (usually a vent restriction)
  • Shuts off mid-cycle
  • Error codes like d80, d90, or d95 (vent codes)
  • Burning smell during operation

My Approach

I repair gas and electric dryers across all major brands, including ventless heat-pump units. Typical work covers heating elements, gas igniters and gas valve coils, thermal fuses, drive belts, drum rollers, idler pulleys, motors, moisture sensors, and control boards. A clogged vent duct is the biggest cause of "takes two cycles" complaints and the leading cause of dryer fires per the U.S. Fire Administration, so I inspect and clean the full vent run on most service calls. Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, and Amana share a platform where the thermal fuse, igniter, and gas valve coils are standard repeat items. Samsung DV front-loaders have a documented heater-housing crack pattern, and Speed Queen dryers remain the reliability outlier in this category.

Try This First

Before you call, a few things are worth a quick try. If any of these fixes it, you save a service call. If not, give me a ring.

  1. 1

Clean the lint filter every load and vacuum the housing monthly

Use a vacuum crevice tool inside the housing cavity. A damp or fabric-softener-coated filter cuts airflow. Never reinstall a wet filter.

  2. 2

Disconnect and inspect the vent duct to the exterior cap

Run a dryer-vent brush through the full run. If the duct is foil-style or kinked, replace it with rigid or semi-rigid per code. Most dryer fires start in neglected flex runs.

  3. 3

Confirm the exterior vent flap opens freely when the dryer runs

Check from outside. Lint, bird nests, and pest screens are the usual culprits.

  4. 4

    Level the dryer

A tilted dryer loads the drum rollers unevenly and wears bearings fast.

  5. 5

Gas dryers: confirm the supply valve is fully open

Confirm that other gas appliances also work. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility first.

  6. 6

Ventless heat pump: clean the condenser filter behind the lower door

Do not remove the sealed condenser coil; that is a service task.

When to Stop and Call Me

A few signals mean stop using the appliance and call a technician. If you see or smell any of these, unplug the unit and reach out.

  • Any smell of gas near a gas dryer (leave the house, call the gas utility from outside)
  • Burning smell during operation or scorch marks on the drum, vent, or back panel
  • Visible flame outside the burner tube on a gas dryer
  • Thermal fuse blown twice or more in a year (persistent overheat)
  • Tripped breaker or GFCI more than once
  • Sparking, arcing, or burnt-plastic smell at the 240V terminal block
  • Ventless heat-pump dryer not heating (refrigerant work is EPA 608 only)

How Long Should This Last

Average Service Life

13 years

Gas and electric are comparable. Speed Queen dryers regularly run 20 to 25 years and outperform the field by a wide margin. Apply the 50% rule. Heating elements, igniters, gas coils, belts, thermal fuses, and door switches usually justify repair through year 12. Motor replacement on a budget unit past year 10 often does not pencil out.

All Major Brands

I service all major brands. If I can get the parts, I can fix it. Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid, Maytag, Bosch, and more. No brand is too obscure.

Rocky Mountain Appliance Solutions turned out to be a great choice when our washing machine decided stop working. The repair person was very friendly, knowledgeable, and quick. He diagnosed the problem, explained the solution to me, and provided a very reasonable quote. It's also nice to know that I'm dealing with a local company and not some place pretending to be local.
