Garbage Disposal Repair

Disposal humming but not spinning, leaking, or jammed? I repair and replace residential garbage disposals across all major brands in Fort Collins.

Common Problems

  • Hums but does not spin (jammed impeller)
  • Will not turn on at all
  • Leaking at the sink flange (top of disposal)
  • Leaking at the dishwasher inlet
  • Leaking from the bottom shell (cracked housing)
  • Loud grinding or rattling
  • Food no longer grinds (stripped flywheel or worn shredder)
  • Frequently tripping the reset button
  • Drains slowly or not at all

My Approach

I repair and replace residential garbage disposals across all major brands. Typical work covers jammed flywheels, stripped impellers, failed start capacitors, worn sink flanges, dishwasher inlet gasket leaks, and mount-assembly failures. Most disposal internals are sealed and not individually serviceable, so a failed motor or cracked bottom shell is a replacement decision rather than a repair. Insinkerator Evolution series regularly run 12 to 15 years, while Badge entry-tier units tend to hit 5 to 7. Waste King permanent-magnet L series jam less often by design but the splash guards wear faster.

Try This First

Before you call, a few things are worth a quick try. If any of these fixes it, you save a service call. If not, give me a ring.

  1. 1

Press the reset button on the bottom

A small red button pops out when tripped. If it keeps tripping, stop and call.

  2. 2

Clear a jam with the 1/4-inch hex wrench

Insert into the socket on the bottom of the disposal and rock back and forth until the flywheel frees. This is the manufacturer's published procedure.

  3. 3

Never put a hand into the disposal

Use tongs or long-handled pliers, and always disconnect power at the breaker first.

  4. 4

Run cold water for 15 seconds before, during, and after grinding

Cold water solidifies fats so they grind rather than coating the chamber. Do not use hot water for grinding.

  5. 5

Ice cube and rock salt clean cycle

One cup of ice and half a cup of rock salt ground with cold water knocks food residue off the shredder ring.

  6. 6

Check the dishwasher inlet knockout plug (new installs)

Forgetting to punch it out causes the dishwasher to back up. Not a disposal fault, but a common service call.

When to Stop and Call Me

A few signals mean stop using the appliance and call a technician. If you see or smell any of these, unplug the unit and reach out.

  • Water leaking from the bottom of the disposal shell (housing is cracked; replace the unit)
  • Repeated thermal-overload trips within the same day
  • Disposal hums with no jam detectable via the hex wrench
  • Electrical smell from the disposal body
  • Visible corrosion or rust staining on the bottom
  • Disposal wobbling in the sink flange (mount assembly failing)
  • Leak at the sink flange that returns after replumbing
  • Air switch that will not reset or wall switch that arcs

How Long Should This Last

Average Service Life

8 to 12 years

Budget units (Badge 1, entry GE) hit 5 to 7 years. Premium Evolution Excel models cleanly reach 12 to 15. Disposals are almost always replace-not-repair because the motor and grinding chamber are a sealed assembly. Repair-favored items are external: sink flange, power cord, dishwasher inlet gasket, air switch. A leaking bottom shell is always replacement.

All Major Brands

I service all major brands. If I can get the parts, I can fix it. Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid, Maytag, Bosch, and more. No brand is too obscure.

Rocky Mountain Appliance Solutions turned out to be a great choice when our washing machine decided stop working. The repair person was very friendly, knowledgeable, and quick. He diagnosed the problem, explained the solution to me, and provided a very reasonable quote. It's also nice to know that I'm dealing with a local company and not some place pretending to be local.

I called Jake on a Monday, he was able to come Wednesday morning - took a look at my dryer, spent about 20 minutes going to get a couple parts picked up, installed them and voila! We are back in the laundry business! He was very prompt and professional. He goes over your repair costs up front too, and is able to take card payment. Great experience!
