Freezer Repair

Freezer not holding temperature or building up frost? I repair standalone upright and chest freezers in Fort Collins. I do not work on walk-in freezers.

Common Problems

  • Not freezing or temperature drifting warm
  • Excessive frost or ice buildup on the back wall
  • Water leaking from under an upright freezer
  • Compressor clicks on and off every few minutes
  • Door gasket hardened, torn, or not sealing
  • Running constantly and cabinet still warm
  • Loud grinding or humming from the compressor
  • Cold-control thermostat stuck on or off (chest freezers)

My Approach

I repair upright and chest freezers across all major brands. Typical work covers defrost heaters and defrost thermostats, evaporator and condenser fan motors, cold-control thermostats on chest freezers, start relays and PTC overloads, door gaskets, and sealed-system refrigerant work under my EPA 608 Type I certification. A clogged defrost drain in an upright freezer is the single most common service call and I carry the tools to clear and re-route it. Samsung French-door paired upright freezers have a documented rear-evaporator ice-buildup issue covered by a class action settlement, and LG linear-compressor units from 2014 to 2019 fall under their own settlement. I do not work on walk-in freezers.

Try This First

Before you call, a few things are worth a quick try. If any of these fixes it, you save a service call. If not, give me a ring.

  1. 1

Check the door seal with a dollar bill

Close the door on a bill. If it pulls out with no resistance, the gasket is failing. Do not try to re-glue a gasket.

  2. 2

    Vacuum the condenser coils

Pull off the back panel grille or check underneath. Vacuum dust and pet hair every 6 to 12 months. Do not pull out built-in uprights; you can crush drain lines behind them.

  3. 3

Let the unit stabilize for 24 hours after any big packing change

Air circulation matters more than most people realize. Do not overpack a freezer that just defrosted.

  4. 4

    Manual defrost attempt

Unplug the unit, move food to coolers, leave the door open with towels down for 24 hours. Never chip at ice with a knife or screwdriver. Puncturing the evaporator ruins the freezer.

  5. 5

    Listen for compressor cycling

Clicking every 3 to 5 minutes with no cooling points to a failed start relay. Do not attempt to jump-start the compressor.

When to Stop and Call Me

A few signals mean stop using the appliance and call a technician. If you see or smell any of these, unplug the unit and reach out.

  • Hissing or gurgling from the back, or oily residue near the compressor (refrigerant leak)
  • Frost only on part of the evaporator coil (sealed-system issue)
  • Scorch marks or burnt-plastic smell from the back of the unit
  • Compressor hums loudly and cycles off within seconds repeatedly (locked rotor)
  • Ice buildup returning within days of a manual defrost (defrost-system failure)
  • Water leaking from a built-in upright where the drain line is not accessible
  • Any freezer built before 1995 with a suspected refrigerant leak (may contain R-12)

How Long Should This Last

Average Service Life

16 years

Range is 10 to 20 years. Chest freezers typically outlast uprights by 3 to 4 years because of simpler mechanics. Apply the 50% rule: if the repair is more than half the price of a new unit, replace. Sub-Zero columns routinely run 20 to 25 years with parts support. A sealed-system failure past year 12 is almost always a replacement decision, and chest freezers tilt toward replacement earlier because the replacement cost is low.

All Major Brands

I service all major brands. If I can get the parts, I can fix it. Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid, Maytag, Bosch, and more. No brand is too obscure.

Rocky Mountain Appliance Solutions turned out to be a great choice when our washing machine decided stop working. The repair person was very friendly, knowledgeable, and quick. He diagnosed the problem, explained the solution to me, and provided a very reasonable quote. It's also nice to know that I'm dealing with a local company and not some place pretending to be local.
