Refrigerator Repair

Fast, reliable refrigerator repair in Fort Collins. I fix all major brands and most problems the same week.

Common Problems

  • Fresh food warm while the freezer stays frozen
  • Ice maker stopped making ice
  • Ice room frosting over on French-door models
  • Water on the floor from the defrost drain
  • Compressor runs constantly and the box is warm
  • Loud fan noise from the freezer section
  • Water dispenser slow or not working
  • Door not sealing or gasket cracked

My Approach

I diagnose and repair refrigerators across side-by-side, French-door, top-freezer, and bottom-freezer layouts. Typical work covers evaporator fan motors, defrost heaters and defrost control, ice maker modules, water inlet valves, door gaskets, condenser fan motors, thermistors, and control boards. I am EPA 608 certified for sealed-system refrigerant work. Certain Samsung French-door series (RF28, RF26, RF23) have a well-documented ice room freeze-over issue that led to a class action settlement, and LG units built roughly 2014 to 2017 have a known linear compressor failure pattern that was also resolved by a class action. When I see those on site I diagnose to confirm and quote the right parts.

Try This First

Before you call, a few things are worth a quick try. If any of these fixes it, you save a service call. If not, give me a ring.

  1. 1

    Vacuum the condenser coils

Pull off the kick plate under the door or look at the back of the unit. Vacuum dust and pet hair off the coils every 6 to 12 months. Dirty coils are the most common reason a fridge runs hot.

  2. 2

    Confirm the temperature settings

Fresh food should sit at 37 to 40 degrees, freezer at 0 to 5 degrees. A bumped dial or panel is more common than you would think.

  3. 3

    Check the door seals

Close a dollar bill in the door. If it slides out without resistance, the gasket is not sealing and the unit works harder than it should.

  4. 4

Replace the water filter if overdue

Filters are rated for 6 months. Low water flow and poor ice production usually trace straight back to an old filter. This is the single most common ice maker call I get.

  5. 5

    Dump old ice

Ice fuses and shrinks in the bin over time. An ice maker that fills but dispenses poorly is often just storing old ice.

When to Stop and Call Me

A few signals mean stop using the appliance and call a technician. If you see or smell any of these, unplug the unit and reach out.

  • Any sweet, ether-like, or chemical smell near the unit (possible refrigerant leak)
  • Electrical burning smell near the compressor or control board
  • Compressor hot to the touch and not running
  • Water pooling behind the unit against the wall or subfloor
  • Repeated breaker trips when the fridge cycles on
  • Active recall notice for your model or serial number

How Long Should This Last

Average Service Life

13 years

Typical range is 10 to 15 years, with side-by-sides trending shorter and top-freezers longer. Compressor replacement past year 12 rarely makes financial sense unless the unit is a Sub-Zero or similar premium build. The rule I use: if the repair approaches half the cost of a comparable new unit and you are past 10 years, replacement is usually the rational call.

All Major Brands

I service all major brands. If I can get the parts, I can fix it. Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid, Maytag, Bosch, and more. No brand is too obscure.

Rocky Mountain Appliance Solutions turned out to be a great choice when our washing machine decided stop working. The repair person was very friendly, knowledgeable, and quick. He diagnosed the problem, explained the solution to me, and provided a very reasonable quote. It's also nice to know that I'm dealing with a local company and not some place pretending to be local.
