Ice Maker & Ice Machine Repair

Ice maker not producing ice, or a standalone commercial ice machine that dropped dead mid-shift? I repair residential built-in and freestanding ice makers along with standalone commercial ice machines across Fort Collins.

Common Problems

  • Not making any ice or production dropped off
  • Cubes coming out small, hollow, or cloudy
  • Ice has an odd taste or smell
  • Water leaking from the unit or supply line
  • Commercial ice machine throwing an error code
  • Loud grinding, clicking, or motor noise

My Approach

I repair residential built-in and freestanding ice makers plus standalone commercial ice machines (undercounter and countertop units). Common work includes water inlet valves, ice molds and cutter grids, thermostats, pumps, water filters, and control boards. Samsung French-door ice makers have a documented freeze-over and auger issue covered by a class-action settlement. Commercial units (Hoshizaki, Scotsman, Manitowoc, Ice-O-Matic) live and die by water quality, and Fort Collins water is moderately hard, so scale buildup on evaporator plates is the single most common failure pattern I see. If your unit is a modular head on a bin or anything inside a walk-in, that sits outside what I work on and I will tell you before I come out.

Try This First

Before you call, a few things are worth a quick try. If any of these fixes it, you save a service call. If not, give me a ring.

  1. 1

    Replace the water filter

Six-month interval on residential, per the manufacturer's filter kit schedule on commercial. This is the single most common call I get. Mark the install date on the filter.

  2. 2

Confirm the water supply valve is fully open

Partially closed saddle valves are the top residential cause of slow or hollow ice.

  3. 3

    Check freezer temperature (residential)

Residential ice makers need the freezer at 0 to 5 degrees to cycle. Above 10 degrees, production stalls.

  4. 4

Confirm the Whirlpool modular shut-off arm is in the down position

Easy to bump accidentally when loading the freezer.

  5. 5

Clean the air intake and condenser screen weekly (commercial)

Restaurant grease and dust pack the coil fast. Do not remove the condenser cover panel.

  6. 6

Run the manufacturer cleaning cycle quarterly (commercial)

Hoshizaki, Scotsman, and Manitowoc all publish a customer-safe clean cycle using their branded cleaner. Follow the manual exactly.

When to Stop and Call Me

A few signals mean stop using the appliance and call a technician. If you see or smell any of these, unplug the unit and reach out.

  • Hissing from the sealed system, or warm evaporator plate (refrigerant work, EPA 608 only)
  • Commercial machine will not complete a harvest cycle after a filter change and cleaning
  • Water leaking onto the floor from a commercial machine
  • Fault codes on Hoshizaki, Scotsman, or Manitowoc that will not clear after a power cycle
  • Ice that tastes metallic, or pink or black slime appearing (biofilm / sanitation issue)
  • Commercial unit past year 7 with a compressor symptom
  • Residential fill tube keeps freezing despite a new inlet valve
  • Commercial unit on a water line with no filtration (must be corrected first)

How Long Should This Last

Average Service Life

7 to 10 years

Residential ice-maker modules typically need replacement every 5 to 7 years regardless of the refrigerator's overall life. Commercial ice machines are rated for 7 to 10 years with proper water filtration and quarterly cleaning. Units on unfiltered water rarely reach year 5. Hoshizaki KM cubers regularly hit 12 to 15 years with maintenance. Sub-Zero built-in residential ice makers are an outlier at 15 to 20 years.

Rocky Mountain Appliance Solutions turned out to be a great choice when our washing machine decided stop working. The repair person was very friendly, knowledgeable, and quick. He diagnosed the problem, explained the solution to me, and provided a very reasonable quote. It's also nice to know that I'm dealing with a local company and not some place pretending to be local.
