Microwave Repair

Microwave runs but will not heat, sparks inside, or the turntable stopped? I repair over-the-range and countertop microwaves across all major brands in Fort Collins.

Common Problems

  • Runs but food stays cold
  • No power or display dark
  • Turntable not spinning
  • Door will not latch, or microwave runs with the door open
  • Sparking or arcing inside the cavity
  • Loud humming with no heat
  • Control panel unresponsive or random behavior
  • Vent fan will not turn off (OTR), or vent will not exhaust
  • SE or 5E error code on Samsung

My Approach

I repair countertop and over-the-range microwaves across all major brands. Typical work covers magnetrons, high-voltage diodes, door interlock switches, turntable motors, control boards, line fuses, vent motors, and charcoal filters. The three door-interlock switches are the most common repeat item on the Whirlpool, Maytag, and KitchenAid OTR platform. Samsung OTR units have a well-documented SE (stuck button) error and magnetron failure pattern. I work on standard OTR and countertop units; built-in microwave drawers (Sharp, Miele) are limited to replacement work.

Try This First

Before you call, a few things are worth a quick try. If any of these fixes it, you save a service call. If not, give me a ring.

  1. 1

    Check the outlet and GFCI

Most OTR units sit on a dedicated 20A circuit with nothing else. Confirm the breaker has not tripped.

  2. 2

Clean the door seal and mating surfaces

Food residue on the door perimeter can throw the interlock latch alignment over time.

  3. 3

Clean the grease filter monthly (OTR)

Soak in hot soapy water or run through the dishwasher top rack per the owner's manual.

  4. 4

Replace the charcoal filter every 6 to 12 months (non-vented OTR)

Part number depends on your model; check the manual.

  5. 5

Reseat the turntable coupler if the plate wobbles

Do not run the microwave without the plate in place.

  6. 6

Power-cycle at the breaker for 60 seconds

NEVER open the microwave cabinet for any reason. The high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge for days after unplugging.

When to Stop and Call Me

A few signals mean stop using the appliance and call a technician. If you see or smell any of these, unplug the unit and reach out.

  • Microwave not heating, for any reason (capacitor hazard; do not open the cabinet)
  • Burning smell, smoke, or visible arcing inside the cavity
  • Door will not latch, or microwave runs with door open (interlock failure; replace immediately)
  • Rust perforating the internal cavity wall (RF leakage risk, replace the unit)
  • Persistent sparking from the waveguide cover
  • Microwave trips a breaker on start (capacitor, diode, or magnetron short)
  • OTR unit hanging crooked or mounting bracket failing (falling-unit hazard)
  • Loud humming with no heat (capacitor or diode failure in progress)

How Long Should This Last

Average Service Life

9 years

Over-the-range units fail earlier than countertops because of heat exposure above the range. For countertop units under roughly the cost of a mid-tier replacement, most component repairs do not pencil out past year 5. Repair-favored items: door switches, diodes, turntable motors, vent motors. Magnetron replacement on a unit past 7 years is usually a replacement decision. Built-in microwave drawers and trim-kit units (Wolf, Thermador) justify repair further because replacement cost is higher.

All Major Brands

I service all major brands. If I can get the parts, I can fix it. Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid, Maytag, Bosch, and more. No brand is too obscure.

Rocky Mountain Appliance Solutions turned out to be a great choice when our washing machine decided stop working. The repair person was very friendly, knowledgeable, and quick. He diagnosed the problem, explained the solution to me, and provided a very reasonable quote. It's also nice to know that I'm dealing with a local company and not some place pretending to be local.
